“Bloody Mary” by Meg Henderson
Book Review: SPOILER FREE.
‘Helen Davidson was born and raised in Glasgow where the city’s most dominant commercial firm is both her birthright and her occupation. Even though she is a Davidson, she spent her childhood in and around the bustling streets with her Auntie Mary, dogged and down-to-earth, who gave Helen the values she holds so dear; values she has in turn handed on to her own daughter; Marylka, a doctor in a city hospital. Helen regarded Marylka’s escape from the family business a triumph, one that had equally delighted Auntie Mary. And yet it was Mary who would reach out from the grave and ensnare Marylka in the Davidson family’s secrets and lies…’
‘Bloody Mary’ was such a terrific read – I finished it so quickly because it was so riveting and enticing that I couldn’t put it down. I was drawn to this book initially because it was set in Glasgow (which is where I am from, if you don’t already know) and I found it so intriguing that I could read a book and relate to the places the author was referring to.
In a nutshell, ‘Bloody Mary’ deals with the hardships and misery of poverty in Glasgow ‘back in the day’, family domestics and uncovers the reality of living – and being brought up – with a wealthy family. Meg Henderson does so in a humorous, moving and original manner. We also learn quite a bit about Glasgow’s background – things that I never knew before – I thoroughly enjoyed discovering new things about my hometown.
I believe this book is appropriate for absolutely anyone – it is educational, exciting and exhilarating. It captivates you and you are extremely eager to find out what happens next.
WHAT I WOULD RATE THIS BOOK: 4/5
‘Bloody Mary’ is a fantastic read – a book I would recommend to anyone. This is not the usual kind of book I would go for (I picked it purely because there were references to Glasgow) but I am so glad that I did.
