BOOK REVIEW: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

The Mortal Instruments: Book One – City of Bones
By Cassandra Clare (BOOK REVIEW – SPOILER FREE).
The Blurb:

Clary Fray is seeing things: Vampires in Brooklyn and werewolves in Manhattan. Irresistibly drawn towards a group of sexy demon hunters, Clary encounters the dark side of New York City – and the dangers of forbidden love.

My thoughts:

City of Bones is a thrilling and hair-raising story. It is said to be a young-adult series (which I have never previously read before – this was my first ‘young-adult series).

In a nutshell, City of Bones tells the story of an ordinary teenage girl , Clary Fray, who is ‘gifted’ with the ability to see things that other people can not. This opens a whole can of worms for Clary as she begins to discover why she has this power. Soon, she finds herself in a whole other world with people and ‘things’ that she never knew existed. We learn about her family secrets and how she has been living her whole life as a lie. She begins to fall in love with the mystifying and irresistible, Jace, but just how deep is this love?

We are introduced to some profound and memorable characters; ones that I could not stop thinking about long after I had put down the book. We are made known to a secretive and mysterious world of Nephilim, shadowhunters, demons, werewolves, vampires and warlocks. (To be 100% honest: This is not the sort of book I would normally pick up. This book was sent to me via a book swap. I would not normally go for this style of writing; but wow! My mind has been blown and I thoroughly enjoyed my first fantasy novel). We encounter many powerful and piercing moments throughout the novel: I simply struggled to put the book down – I had to know what was happening next.

Clare is such a sensational writer and I am in awe of how wonderfully written this book was. I have heard that this book is one in which you will either love or hate: I loved it. I am genuinely so pleased that I have been introduced to this story world and I can not wait to read the rest of the series.
What I would rate this book: 5/5
‘City of Bones’ is a truly impeccable and enticing read that I am now going to recommend to absolutely everyone. I am so glad that I have finally opened my eyes to the world of fantasy novels and I am grateful to Cassandra Clare for providing me with such a magnificent experience as a first time read.
Where I got this book from:

The lovely Vee O’ Sullivan (@veeosullivan) & I decided to do a book swap with one another. I sent her over a book that I had finished reading through the post and she sent me ‘City of Bones’ in return. I could not have asked for a better book; thank you so much Vee!

I just want to say:
Words can not describe how much I enjoyed reading this book, I finished it so quickly, I was so hooked. My review does not do this book justice. I actually found writing this review a bit nerve-racking because this book is just so glorious that I am afraid I am not able to do it any justice at all. But please read and see for yourselves! It is fabulous!
